People forget, especially those uninterested in battles and wars, how brutal warfare was back in these times. Not that it is not brutal now but... there is something primal about a wall of armored horses crushing and mauling everyone on their way.
Agreed. Bringing those more ancient scenes to life has always been what I've wanted to convey in my writing, including the fear, the triumph, and the chaos.
In my case, I always wanted to imagine what a most brutal spaceship boarding would look and feel like. With the blinding flash speed of it and the terror of soundless doom flying all around you. Years of research and theorizing later, and you have the multi-layered, moving and twisting battlefield in space, thousands armor-clad warriors killing each other, including on its outer hull.
Well done! Arnand's death made me think of the deaths of Simoeisios, possibly a wheelwright, or Satnios, son of a herder, in the Iliad; the first killed, almost immediately, by the nobles/warriors in particular bouts of fighting, and neither one considered one of the nobles.
This is amazing and honestly I was getting emotional towards the end. Thank you so much for this series, it is always a joy to read. I wonder, do you know the game trilogy ‘the Banner Saga’? It’s my favourite game of all time because of the story and art. Farild’s Hundred reminded me of the mercenary band known as ‘the Ravens’ in the game.
Thank you so much. Happy to hear you're enjoying the series. This has made my day :) I have played Banner Saga! Although I confess I didn't get very far. I love me a Nordic-vibed game, but at the time I was looking for something more free-form. I always wanted to give it another chance, though. I've heard amazing things about the narrative.
Of course, I’m definitely looking forward to your next entries and rooting for the Samyuzot. I think you would like TBS, it’s not perfect but there’s nothing quite like it in my opinion.
This was good. This was so good.
Thanks, Michael!

I enjoyed this Simeot story very much. I couldn't stop reading.
Glad I could steal your time :)

A Homer comparison! I’m honored. Love the reference. And I love how you so often find mythological connections.
Oof. The cavalry charge reminded me of what I’ve read about Waterloo. And poor Samyuzot. Alone again.
