@Eric Falden - wow! Since 2016 I have been unable to settle in and lose myself in a good story. I don't know how you came across my transom, but within a paragraph or two, I was hooked! I'm still figuring out Substack, and have accidentally subscribed to hundreds of great commentators. Hope I find you again! I am so ready to lose myself in a good story! Thank you!

I am continuously impressed at how efficiently and brilliantly you’re able to establish the settings for these. We the readers have everything we need so quickly.

That battle description was spectacular! Loved the archery combat, and how swift and deadly it was. Every action, decisive. Can't wait to see how Simeot handles some close quarters fighting in those caves.

Glad you liked it David. We’ll definitely see Simeot in action alongside these other fighters soon enough!

I'm not gonna lie; "like it" is an extreme understatement. Lol.

I'm loving this series! Can we expect any more posts on the future?

Yes! Anecdote #4 will arrive next week. #5 will be January 28 and #6 on February 11. I post every two weeks, and while not every post will be The Samyuzot, I want to make sure that when they do go up, I post a few in a row.

Excellent. Simply, excellent. The storyteller's craft honed to a fine edge.

Very cool. I love the lyrical rhythm of the prose throughout this piece. Definitely one of the better pieces of yours I’ve read, and that’s saying something.

Thanks so much, Max! I appreciate it.

Samyuzot... that name sounds almost Scythian. I really liked this; lean storytelling, everything is aimed and shot, hitting the bullseye without fail.

Hmm. I wonder if the boy will show up again.

MmmMmmm interesting. Our forsaken Samyuzot is giving up on his vows to be cursed? Isn’t he supposed to be alone forever?

One thing I am having trouble getting across in the short-story format: his bond is very specific. He can't cover his head; he can't have hair on his head; he cannot consume food while he steps foot on the sacred plains.

In effect, he has to wander in foreign lands (if he wants to not starve) and thus he can never be with his people. In that sense, he's alone. But he can live among the "highlanders" who do not share his customs, his religion, or his language. Up until now, though, he just didn't want to....

Ah, I see. I assumed it was part of the deal. That scene in the last story where he is rushing around trying to shave his head was very intense.

"Whatever brought you here to this edge of this Word-blasted world, it was nothing good."

Are these stories set in the same world as Maldurian the Delver? Or am I grasping at imaginary connections?

Expand full comment

Not imaginary! Every one of my stories is set in the same world. Though this story is a few centuries removed from the cataclysms of Maldurian the Delver. Good memory, Sam!

You did it again, Eric. Enjoyed this immensely.
